You know those smoothies that you drink that are just sooooo refreshing? They fill your mouth with a burst of flavour that reminds you of spring and summer and tingles your taste buds and makes you feel all fresh and happy inside. Does this only happen to me? Something about the combination of ginger and lemon always makes me feel so cleansed and refreshed and healthy! Pair it with greens enough to make the whole thing turn a beautiful, vibrant green colour and you know you have a winner.
Somehow I have never posted a green smoothie recipe on here. There are new ones coming out of my kitchen several times a week, sometimes thoughtfully constructed, and other times just thrown together with whatever fruit and veg options are happening in the fridge. I love them as a breakfast or lunch option and lately I’ve been enjoying them the most as smoothie bowls. And green ones are definitely my fave!
This green smoothie is not only packed with lots of healthy greens, but also has lemon, ginger and green apple, all powerful detoxing ingredients for the body. The addition of the hemp hearts adds a nice dose of protein, but feel free to add protein powder as well if you are sipping this as a post-workout beverage. I also made mine with coconut kefir, a fermented beverage that is regularly brewing in our kitchen. This probiotic is very good for cleansing the digestive system and is excellent for improving gut health. If you want to know more about it, feel free to check out my post on fermentation! I like my smoothies pretty thick, so I didn’t add much of it, but feel free to adapt the liquid volume until the smoothie reaches your desired consistency. If you’re after a bit of a refresh and cleanse after your weekend holiday, this is the perfect smoothie to start your week off!
